Serena Williams Wins Wimbledon Women’s Final
WIMBLEDON, England — Serena Williams won her eleventh victory over her sister Venus in a final, taking away the Wimbledon women’s crown in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Struggling on Centre Court, the world’s most hallowed tennis turf, the two American sisters fought evenly through a first set in 52 minutes, hitting stroke for stroke over much of the time, Venus relenting only in the tie breaker when she loses sight of a Serena slam, the ball skipping under her racket.
That sent Serena ahead 4-2 and within moments, she knocked down the door to the first set. The final insult came when Serena lobbed over her sister to take the 7th point and claim the set.
The second set flew by in only 35 minutes, too soon, it seemed, for Venus Williams to recover what had been a steady momentum of battle. A double fault at 2-3 gave her sister the game and the lead. Serena never looked back, crushing forehands and backhands,
sometimes jumping onto one leg or the other in frustration — or elation. The final set ran downhill against Venus.
The Queen had lost her crown — to her sister.
